The Institute of Blood Transfusion (IBT), Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, was founded in 1958 in Tianjin, and then removed to Chengdu in 1965. As the exclusive state-level institute of transfusion medicine, IBT is oriented towards development and application. It is engaged in transfusion medicine and relevant subjects research and product development. Over the 40 years, IBT has made an extensive and honorable contribution to the construction and development of transfusion medicine of China，especially in the area of blood safety, HLA research and bank construction, and biotech research.

    IBT mainly engaged in five disciplines: biochemical and molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, cell biology and biomedicine, projecting in the scientific research and product development of blood transmissible diseases, virus inactivation of blood products, HLA tissue typing, cord blood stem cell, genetic engineering drugs, humane plasma fractionation, blood typing serology and diagnostic kits, in vitro diagnosticum of hemostasis and thrombus, and transfusion material and appliance et al. Among them, 65 prizes were issued by the State, the Ministry of Health(MOH) and Sichuan Province Government. And 10-odd projects were patented by the Patent Office of China.

    In the recent 10 years, seven persons have served as experts of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the MOH, and the Administration of Medicine; 20 and 25 persons served at least as directors in national and provincial academic societies, respectively.

    Up to now, IBT has trained over 40 doctors and masters. Meanwhile, it also trained professional staffs in transfusion medicine nationally. At present, IBT have such national key laboratories as HIV antibody Confirmative Testing Laboratory, HLA Reference Laboratory affirmed by MOH, and Tissue Typing Laboratory of Chinese HSC Donors Reference affirmed by Red Cross Society of China.

    IBT owns two national scientific periodicals, Chinese Journal of Blood Transfusion and Foreign Medical Sciences-Blood Transfusion and Heamatology; it also take share of the Sichuan Cord Blood Stem Cell Center Co. Ltd, the sole one in west China.

    At present, Sichuan Union Bio-Tech Corporation and two exclusively-invested subsidiary company of Tianhai Market Co. Ltd under IBT are mainly engaged in diagnostiregents for blood coagulation diseases, diagnostic kits and leukodepletion filter, et al.

    At present, a total staff number of 161 work with IBT, among which 87 are middle-level and senior staffs, including one supervisor for doctorate candidate and six for master candidates.
